Conophytum phoeniceum (Umdaus)

First found by Steven Hammer on quartz in the Umdaus area, few people have been able to find it subsequently. The flowers open at night and I feel that it has a relationship with the C. stephanii group of species rather than the C. burgeri group where it is presently placed. It will form small clumps as shown above but these easily disappear if you get cultivation wrong. It also has an annoying habit of often producing extra leaf pairs on each shoot.
